Fishers of Men

Are you a disciple of Jesus Christ? Are you His follower? Is His really the Captain of your salvation? We are told that at the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry, “As He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then Jesus said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.’ They immediately left their nets and followed Him.”[1]

We know the rest of the story. Peter and Andrew and the other true disciples went on to spread the gospel and many souls were saved. Yes, Peter, Andrew and all the disciples faltered often, but God would always restore them and they would go on following the Lord and catching men’s souls for their Master. Now we know that God cannot lie. Jesus said that if you are His follower, He will make you a fisher of men. Though we are not all evangelists, we are all called to the work of evangelism.

Jesus came to this earth to “to seek and to save that which was lost.”[2] Towards the end of His ministry He said to His followers “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”[3] We have all been commissioned. This is our urgent task while we remain on this earth. Time is short. May the Lord strengthen us today with a renewed commitment to seek and to save that which was lost.
