The contrast was stark. Friday – I arrive at prison for study – the guard immediately states – “They’re ready. They’ve been asking for you.” Sure enough, several inmates had their Bibles and we’re ready for study. Now understand, most of these teens come from broken homes and are hurting.
Now fast forward to Saturday – at the Mall I approach three guys who look fairly well-off. They immediately deny God’s existence and appear indifferent as I begin to share. They believe in evolution and scoff at the Bible. When I expose the folly of evolution, and give evidence for the Bible’s inspiration, one abruptly says, “I don’t care, I’m not living my life fearing God or worrying about judgment. I just want to have a good time.” All three walk away. As the Bible anticipates, it is those the world calls fools who are more often open to the things of God. Those whom the world esteems are more likely to scoff and make excuses.
In the parable of the Great Supper, the servant announces that the Supper is ready, yet those invited make excuses. Then the master of the house, being angry, tells his servant, “Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and the maimed and the lame and the blind.”
So if you have found many in your witnessing sphere to be complacent, then spread out. Go also to the least and the last. Remember, they are more likely to receive the Father’s invitation.
