Before being saved I attended a Catholic church for many years. During this time I thought the commandments were the means to be saved. I imagined that if I could avoid what the Church called mortal sin, I stood a good chance of entering heaven. However, after reading through the Bible I discovered that no one can keep the law perfectly accept God. So what is the purpose of God’s Holy commandments? Well let’s allow God’s Word to speak for itself: Romans 3:19-20 explains “That whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.” Romans 7:7 reiterates: “What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, ‘You shall not covet.’” And finally Galatians 3:24 makes clear that the laws ultimate purpose is to lead us to Jesus: “Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.” In summary, 1 Timothy 1:8 tells us that the law is good if one uses it lawfully. Therefore, may we purpose to use the law lawfully to expose sin, stop the sinners excuses, and lead them to Jesus Christ.
