Sometimes illustrations help when witnessing. If you meet a person who professes to be a Christian but they admit that they seldom read God’s Word, here is an illustration you can share that will encourage them to read it and obey it.

Suppose you were trapped in a burning building. There was no exit, flames were on every side. Your spouse pulls in the driveway and hears your screams. He charges through the flames to your rescue. He wraps you in a heavy blanket and carries you through the flames to safety. Though you’re safe, he has very serious burns over much of his body. In the hospital, the doctor informs you that he will not survive. At his bedside, he struggles to tell you that he loves you and that he has kept a journal of your lives. In the journal he has written down everything that is important to both of you. With a fading voice he shares where the journal is, and asks you to read it, and then dies.

Now let me ask you a question. Would you read it? Of course. You would cherish your journal more then any other earthly possession. Well, Jesus bore the flames of God’s eternal justice for you and I. He also left us His Word as a gift and a guide. If you love Him, wouldn’t you read it?
