When witnessing to telemarketers, be patient, note the person’s name and allow them the opportunity to say their entire sales pitch.
Not long ago a lady by the name of Sue called. I listened as she shared her entire script and then I complimented her by saying “Wow Sue, that was a long sentence, you said it very well.” She laughed and thanked me. Then I asked, “Sue, is this what you’ve always wanted to do?” She said “No, I’d like to teach some day.” “And what then?” Sue replied that she would eventually like to teach in different areas. “And after that what will you do?” “Well I suppose I’ll eventually retire” she admitted. “And then what?” Sue paused for a moment and said, “Well, I guess then I’ll die.” “And then what?” She laughed nervously and said she hadn’t given death much thought. Well let’s talk about that I said, and we had an important discussion.
Telemarketers may annoy you, but place yourself in their shoes. Most are simply trying to make a living, and they have to deal with rejection and rudeness on a daily basis. Patience and a kind word can open the door to share God’s eternal truth. Of course, not all telemarketers will listen. But if you’re kind and patient, address them by name, and ask questions, I have found that many will. And remember, their souls are just as important as your closest friend’s. So the next time your phone rings, be willing and God will use you.
