As evangelists we must always remember our utter dependency on the Lord. Only His Spirit can convict and convince. Only His Word enlightens blind eyes. “Salvation belongs to the LORD.” “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” For it is only the gospel of Christ which “is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes.” And God’s Word will only profit if it is sent out by the Holy Spirit.
It is not by our might or power or efforts, but by God’s Spirit that a soul is convicted and saved. “Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.” Jesus said “without Me you can do nothing.” He also said “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
I am reminded of these scriptures often as I witness. They remind me not to place any confidence in the flesh. A good prayer to pray before witnessing is something like this: “Dear Lord, without You I can do nothing. Only You can soften hard hearts. Only Your Spirit can convict. Please enable me by Your Holy Spirit to speak the truth in love today. Please plant deep Your convicting Word. Please open blinded eyes and shine the light of the glorious gospel into their heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
