When witnessing, I like to ask questions. It tends to disarm the person, gives them a chance to share their point of view, and reveals where they stand. Here’s a good question for someone who believes in evolution: “If we evolved, where did our conscience come from?” “How did the Big Bang evolve an ability to know right from wrong?”
Some may respond that we learn morality from our family or society. But this only backs up the question – where did they learn it from? If evolution is true this regression brings us back to space dust. Another question you might ask is: “Why does the moral law contradict survival of the fittest?” Survival of the fittest teaches that to survive we do what we have to do. If that means murdering, stealing, or lying, then as by-products of evolution we do them. However our conscience reveals that murder, theft, and deceit are wrong. Obviously a Higher Power must have given us our conscience. Evolution has no solution for conscience, but the Bible states that God has given us a conscience to lead us to the Savior. Once you pique their interest, use the moral law to explain sin. Explain that placing our needs before the Creator is idolatry; one lie makes us liars; and lust is equivalent to adultery in God’s eyes.
When sharing, ask intriguing questions that tend toward conviction. Only by lighting a fire in their conscience will they begin to hunger and thirst for God’s righteousness and seek His mercy.
