The man at my front door was from an environmental group that I supported years ago. He was passionate that we are destroying our environment and that if radical steps were not soon taken we may all become extinct. I said that I agreed that we have a mandate to care for the creation. Then I said “May I ask you a question?” He replied “Of course.” “Which do you think is more important the creation or the Creator who made it?” He looked at me seriously, removed his hat, and bowed his head revealing his yarmulke. He then said “The Creator is more important.” He was a conservative Jew, so I began in Genesis. It was clear that he believed in the creation account, the fall of man, and the curse on all of creation. I moved on to the Law and explained the spirit of the law and its strict requirements. He was quite convicted. I then explained our need for a substitutionary sacrifice – pointing to the Messiah. Finally we discussed the Messianic prophecies identifying Jesus as the Messiah. He was visibly shaken. He left with much to think about. By simply using a question to draw out biblical truth, then sharing about the Creator from Genesis, the Law, and the Prophets, this man heard and understood God’s plan. By laying a foundation the gospel now made sense. Try using this simple question and trust the Lord to guide the conversation.
