I’ve been involved in prison ministry for several years. During one period I went with a zealous new believer. He had been with me the week before, but only a few inmates came back for the Bible study. This night it was a full-house. My friend, the new believer, immediately recognized why – “Their just coming for the food” he told me – quite upset. I told him, don’t worry we can talk about it on the way home.
The inmates were very grateful for the food and most listened through the entire study. As I drove home with this new Christian it was apparent that he was still upset. “It is wrong for them to come for the food and not for their souls” he complained. I agreed that their priorities were wrong – but most were not yet saved, so we should expect it. Furthermore, Jesus fed the multitudes and healed the sick knowing that many would still reject Him. In fact we are told that Jesus “went about doing good” to all.
Providing for material needs, and even wants, is a legitimate stepping-stone in evangelism. You have blessed them in Jesus’ name with their daily bread, and told them about the eternal bread of life. So for today’s witnessing tip – simply meet a need and then plant a seed. God will give the increase.
